If you’re a regular reader here, you know I like to make up words. Before I moved to Portugal in 2022, I featured Monday’s Midlife Made-Up Word here every week. Now, tune in the last week of every-ish month for a made-up word mashed together from Portuguese, or an English and Portuguese combo. This sometimes happens unintentionally as I continue to learn to speak Portuguese.
Zombarangia
Today’s made-up word is zombarangia (n): Angry mockery that is often weaponized under the pretense of playful teasing; a blend of irritation and sarcasm used to mask hostility behind humor.
Derived from “zombaria” (Portuguese for mockery) and “zanga” (Portuguese for anger).

Thoughts? Suggestions? Let me know in the comments.

Thank you for reading! ❤️ May your weekend find you smiling.

Love the word mashup. It feels better on the tongue and echoes its romantic origins much better than our ‘passive aggressive’ term. 😉

Yes, a wonderful word for something I would dislike more if I weren’t guilty of practicing it myself on occasion!
