Bomb cyclone Kristin last week slammed into Portugal’s Silver Coast and Central regions with historic winds that reached as high as Category 3 (178-208kmh) hurricane force, causing the government to declare a state of emergency as it continues to tally the damages, which they now estimate at more than €4 billion. Storm Leonardo followed this week, causing flooding, landslides, and evacuations along overflowing rivers. Now, Portugal’s meteorologists are warning Storm Marta is coming this weekend, bringing winds of up to 120kmh (Category 1 hurricane force) and heavy rains to already devastated areas. Today, the national grid operator E-Redes reports 93,000 households remain without power. (Kristin initially knocked out power to more than a million homes.)
