Midlife Made-Up Word Mash-Up in Portugal

If you’re a regular reader here or on my Instagram page, you know I like to make up words. Before I moved to Portugal in 2022, I used to feature Monday’s Midlife Made-Up Word here every week. Now, tune in the last Friday of every month for a made-up word mashed together from Portuguese, or an English and Portuguese combo. This sometimes happens unintentionally as I continue to learn to speak Portuguese.

Claromerda

Today’s made-up word is claromerda (n): Definite BS, clearly shit, obvious bullcrap.

Derived from claro (Portuguese for of course) and merda (Portuguese for shit).

Not to be confused with the actual Portuguese word claramente (clearly). But, of course, I will. Confuse them. Maybe when I’m talking to a bank manager here. But, claramente, then I might not really be confused.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Let me know in the comments.

Rainbows have been plentiful here this week, as the sky struggles to make up its mind.
Rain? Or sunshine?

Thank you for reading! ❤️ May your weekend find you appreciating moments of joy and hope, despite any claromerda.

  2. Hello. I enjoy reading your newsletters and I do follow you on Instagram. My husband, best friend, and I will be in Portugal at the end of May for my big 60! This is our second visit – Lisbon and Porto. We will do some day trips, and I am wondering if it is worth going to Aveiro for the day. We are coming from Bermuda, so not really interested in going to any beaches, but if you can suggest some great little towns to visit, I welcome your thoughts. Kind Regards, Honey Adams
