I’m not sure what happened to October since yesterday was September, but my moving abroad anniversary month and start of my second year living solo in Portugal was an absolute delight. I’ll be sharing my experiences as an expat later this week as part of the online Move to Portugal Summit event, November 3-5, hosted by Blaxit Global and Our Black Utopia.

November is also the deadline I gave myself for finding an accountant here that specializes in expat taxes and is knowledgeable about U.S. and Portuguese tax law. I became a tax resident in Portugal as soon as my local address was officially linked to my NIF document in the Finanças system. That happened in January of this year, after my SEF immigration appointment. I simply went online on the Finanças website, uploaded a photo of the “receipt” I was given at SEF, removed my U.S. address that was used when I applied for my residency visa, and typed in my local address as confirmed by my “receipt.” I did not have to wait for my resident card.
I also applied online for Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) status at the same time. It was easy and fast to DIY, following these step-by-step instructions. My application was approved, so my NHR status gives me certain tax advantages for 10 years. NHR may be abolished by the Portuguese government after this year, but anyone who already has it would retain it. I will have to file taxes in Portugal for the first time next year, for 2023 — my first year as a tax resident. I’ll also still need to file a tax return in the U.S. I wrote about taxes in Portugal here, but there’s a lot I’m still not clear on, thus my search for a tax accountant in Portugal.

Enough tax talk for now. I’ll close with a photo recap of October as I look forward to a marvelous November. Maybe I’ll even see some of you at the Summit this week.

I am not saying a word.
Nope. Not. One. Damn. Thing.
(But I am reminded of this post.)

This dino head was in the pumpkin festival hall. I used a background-changing app to switch to this fall backdrop.

Thank you for reading ❤️. May your November start with a smile.

Thank you, Laura! Those sardines were delicious. Hard to believe they were the first I’ve had here, and the first ever that didn’t come from a can.
