If you’re a regular reader here or on my Instagram page, you know I like to make up words. Before I moved to Portugal in 2022, I featured Monday’s Midlife Made-Up Word here every week. Now, tune in the last Friday of every month for a made-up word mashed together from Portuguese, or an English and Portuguese combo. This sometimes happens unintentionally as I continue to learn to speak Portuguese.
Reclamente
Today’s made-up word is reclamente (n): A person who is mentally wired to constantly complain about everything, even when things are going well.
Derived from reclamar (Portuguese for to complain) + mente (Portuguese for mind).
(Not to be confused with the actual Portuguese word “reclamante,” which means “complainant.”)

Thoughts? Suggestions? Let me know in the comments.
This is a No Reclamente Zone. Zona de Não Reclamente. Good vibes only, se faz favor.

Thank you for reading! ❤️ May your weekend find you appreciating the good stuff.

The bookstore and area look wonderful Natalie. I bet I’d find something to complain about, so I’m probably not a welcome visitor! 😋

I am a recovering reclamente, so I know what you mean. 😉

Brilliant pairing of wine with books and vegetables. Reclamente is definitely a word we need to describe a very real condition. I will embrace the word as a reminder to avoid the disease!

As a recovering reclamente myself, I also need reminders. Hanging out in that bookstore helps reduce my chances of a relapse. 🍷

Wow that bookstore looks amazing! You’d definitely not hear any reclamente’s from me if I were there haha! Never heard of Obidos before. What a beautiful little village! Must put it on my travel list! 🙂 Have a great weekend Natalie!

Thank you, Melissa! ❤️ Obidos is a picturesque walled village inland from the Silver Coast, and it can get quite crowded during tourist season. We lucked out on a lovely, sunny day. Not overrun with tourists, and the shops were easily accessible. My first time in that bookstore, and I will definitely be going back. Happy weekend to you!

Reclamantes and traveling don’t mix. Great invented word. Hope you will share more about your South American travels. : )

So true about travel and complaining! Some travelers were the inspiration for this month’s word. 🤐

Thank you, Jane! ❤️ Some current events make it difficult to keep the reclamente in me from reappearing.

The word is the exact opposite of your attitude

Thank you for this! 💕 There was a time when that wasn’t always the case, unfortunately. It feels good to have aged into this place of a more grateful mind.
